    Default Strange experiences

My dad died when I was 16. A couple of years later I dreamt I was in the kitchen with mum and dad when the phone rang. I answered and it was a friend of dad's. In my dream I thought it was odd that she should ask to speak to mum rather than dad. Anyhow, I called for my mum, explaining who it was, My dad intervened saying, "No, I'll take this call", and he took the phone from me. End of dream.

When I woke up, my mum told me she'd had a call that morning to say that my dad's friend had died the previous night.

Strange, but probably explainable. I was still staying with my mum at the time, so my take on it is that in my sleep, I probably overheard the phone call my mum got and incorporated it into my dream.

Still, it was pretty spooky at the time.

Spooky? Of course. But if you count up all the times that you dreamed of someone and they didn't die, it doesn't seem all that unusual. I'd expect that any particular person would have this kind of dream several times in their life, while having millions of "nonprophetic" dreams that they never notice because they never come true.

It's confirmation bias. You notice it because it's unusual.

Doesn't stop it being spooky though.

I reckon there was more to it than just unusual coincidence, but I hasten to add I don't believe in the paranormal.

    1. This happened about 18 months after my dad had been a regular feature of my dreams. I thought it unusual that he put in an appearance at all.
    2. My dad's friend was someone that I'd no contact with, nor given any thought to since his death.
    3. They both featured in the same dream.
    4. I was told of her death within a couple of hours of having the dream.

Anyhow, there's no real point to this thread. Just though I'd share. 'Weird' stuff happens to people who believe in rational explanations too.

Actually, I think this is a great thread. After the weird thing happens, we have two choices. If we conclude "Here's what I believe caused this, therefore this is the only possible explanation", then that's okay I guess, but whatever label we put on that process, we shouldn't use the label science.

If, however, our response is more like "What are the possible explanations, and how can we select the correct, or 'most correct', one?" then we have indeed entered the realm of science.

At the end of the day, science might not be able to answer every question. That doesn't make it any less scientific.

And I've never disagreed with this assessment.
